What is pregnancy massage?

Pregnancy massage is a specialized therapy that provides safe and targeted care to a woman's body during pregnancy. With gentle, rhythmic movements, it aims to relieve tension in the lower back, neck, and legs, improve circulation, and reduce fluid retention.

At Athens Massage Center, sessions are conducted by experienced therapists in a completely safe and calm environment, always tailored to the needs of each expectant mother.

What are its benefits?

The benefits of prenatal massage are:

  • Relief from Muscle Pain: The weight gain and shift in the center of gravity during pregnancy often cause significant strain on the lower back, pelvis, neck, and shoulders. With gentle, rhythmic movements and targeted pressure, prenatal massage releases the accumulated muscle tension.
  • Improvement of Circulation & Reduction of Edema: During the third trimester, many expectant mothers experience swelling (edema) in the lower limbs due to fluid retention. Lymphatic massage encourages lymph flow and helps remove toxins and excess fluid. Enhanced blood circulation alleviates leg fatigue and promotes proper oxygenation of the placenta, supporting the healthy development of the fetus.
  • Deep Relaxation & Stress Reduction: Pregnancy is often accompanied by psychological tension and worries about the baby’s health. Prenatal massage stimulates the production of serotonin and endorphins, while reducing norepinephrine (the stress hormone). The result is a noticeable decrease in tension, improved mood, and better quality sleep — all critical for the mental well-being of the expectant mother.
  • Relief from Cramps & Dynamic Support of Joints: Hormonal changes loosen the ligaments to facilitate childbirth, but this can lead to pain and stiffness. Targeted stretches and gentle pressure on sensitive areas (glutes, thighs, calves) help reduce painful cramps. At the same time, the stability of the pelvic joints is strengthened, preparing the body for labor.
  • Enhancement of Mother–Fetus Bond: Through tactile contact and the sense of care, a gentle “communication” with the baby is created. Numerous studies show that mothers who regularly receive prenatal massage report increased emotional connection and calmness. This interpersonal strengthening can help manage any anxiety about childbirth and foster a happier pregnancy.
