The exact cause of cellulite is unknown, but it appears to result from an interaction between the connective tissue in the dermatological layer below the skin surface and the fat layer just below it. In women, the fat cells and connective tissue in this layer are arranged vertically. If fat cells protrude into the skin layer, this gives the appearance of cellulite.

Some of the factors that seem to be associated with cellulite are hormones, age, heredity, lifestyle.

A scale of cellulite severity published using three points:

Grade 1, or mild: There is an “orange-peel” appearance, with between 1 and 4 superficial depressions, and a slightly “draped” or sagging appearance to the skin.

Grade 2, or moderate: There are between five and nine medium-depth depressions, a “cottage cheese” appearance, and the skin appears moderately draped.

Grade 3, or severe: There is a “mattress” appearance, with 10 or more deep depressions, and the skin is severely draped.

Several treatments have been proposed to remove cellulite, but none have yet been confirmed by scientific research. Some that have been proven to help reduce or even prevent cellulite are:

  • Acoustic wave therapy
  • Laser treatment

  • Carboxytherapy
  • Enterology

Alternative or complementary therapies include caffeine, grape seed extract or gingko biloba. These agents have been applied topically, orally and by injection, but none of them have been shown to be effective.
